Jalousie (Jealousy) 'Tango Tzigane' - Tune of whenever

Post by fjsys » Wed Dec 10, 2014 5:50 pm

From the thread "First and Most Recent Tune" ( http://accordionists.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2010" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) it would seem that a few of us are working on Jalousie Tango.
So I thought it may be good to put a separate thread together where we can encourage one another with it.

For me (because of the arrangement) this will take longer than a month to get up to where I can comfortably play it, so I am going to ignore the "Month" boundary and say this is the tune of "whenever" and will be posting my incremental results occasionally in this thread.

Anyone else is free to join in.

There is a simple lead sheet on page 42 of this book:
http://www.mandragoratango.com/sheetmus ... 040121.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am working from a arrangement by Roberto Carreno and I know there are others, so feel free to use whatever you find. That is a lot of the fun of this section to me is to hear other arrangements.

For the by earists in the group there are plenty of examples on youtube.
Simple version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaDRiGcYMmA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This one starts with the arrangement that I have and is still close for the first bit. Then he seems to improvise quite well with it. :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJxAZEY1BhE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Have fun with it.

good idea :idea:

it seems difficult to find good examples and info on some tunes so will read this with interest

a friend of mine loves this tune and is helping me to learn it - the tune sounds different to ones ive listened to online though so think it is a variation or he cant remember it fully as it was many years ago when he played it

I learned this tune when I was 15 from a Charles Magnate sheet music publication for accordion and play it still today. This is much the same and accurate --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-tLknp9o8M" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; -- although played by 2 accordions it will still come in handy for those of you learning by ear.

Yes, its one of my favourite tango's too. Also La Compasita is a good one.

Ben
when you say simple this seems to be laid out in an unusual way with duplicate chords (some very unfamiliar to me)above dots and random A and B down side :| :?

maybe its because i am not a good dot reader and not an experienced player

Well there are a lot of jazz style chords in that sheet, but the main thing with the two chords is that the top is the chord that you would play and the bottom is the bass.
So the first:
G7
F

means play the G7th chord with the F bass.

For simplicity I would just play the G/G7th sequence.

The - (minus) means minor. So C-/Eb means play the Cminor chord with the Eb bass (or just play standard C/Cmin sequence)

For some of the other chords just play the minor or 7th and ignore the augmentation.
If you are feeling adventurous you can look at:
http://www.accordionpage.com/chcomb.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

otherwise just use what you like.

The A B down the side is just indicating/clarifying the section, nothing to do with the music itself. In fact in their notation of the particular piece, as there is no indicated form or repeats, its seems superfluous - which maybe why the confusion?

If you look at the first piece 9 de Julio where it tells you (bottom) to play A,B,A,Trio (repeat it all (optionally)) and end on another repeat of A (from memory) the purpose becomes clear - saves paper & page turning... and maintains the black art for us dotters.. :)

Continuing from the other thread, yes the Marocco version of 'Jalousie' is in 'Jazz Accordion Book 2'. I can't find any recordings online. The last chorus modulates from C to Db but your other 1920's arrangement looks more difficult I reckon.

As an aside, the composer was actually Danish and apparently didn't write anything else worth playing or listening to!

i'm confused now as never really had recommended sheet music for this

is the mandragora one above the more simplified one

thats surprises me too that a composer can become famous for one tune and other work goes unnoticed by many

The standard "performed" key is F Dmin, the Mandragora is version is in C Ebmin, and it's also written out in a confusing manner. There's plenty of clearer versions on the net for a few pounds. I've worked it out by ear from a few different performances, so can't help with the dots.
If you search for the composer you'll also find the other pieces that wrote as a bonus.

So here is where I currently am with the tune.
I realize it is a little rough, but it has come a long way.

Bert Santilly will be teaching "Jealousy" during his workshop on 8th March, in Hertfordshire.

Also "La Cumparsita".

:) i thought i was learning jealousy but i'm not now .. a friend of mine was helping me with a tune he liked and used to play which he called jealousy (....some 40 years ago) - well it seems he inadvertently kind of put both these tunes together in one tune but he was really trying to recall la cumparsita - he did say something didnt seem quite right :roll:

anyway to cut a long story short i am learning the cumparsita now with jealousy on the back burner :oops:

Ok, I think Ben removed his... besides him, how is it coming along for you guys and gals... anyone else going to try this one? In the version I saw, it's not quite the easy play. :)
